 Academic Advising:

Once a student is admitted, they are immediately given a personal advisor. Each student meets with their advisor bi-weekly.  In this space the student and the advisor analyze and address the student’s holistic development which is inclusive of personal, educational, social, cultural, professional, financial, and spiritual issues.  The advisor assists the student in setting personal goals, improving their time management, and providing options and opportunities for the students grow into their full potential. Advisors also have a relationship with students’ parents or guardians. The advisor speaks to parents and supports the parents/guardians in any way they can to help advance their child’s life, however, advising is confidential.

Homework Assistance:

For 2 hours every day, academic tutors assist students with their homework in all subject areas.  EXCEL has an “each one teach one” homework help methodology meaning that the tutor will show the student how to do a problem  and then the student must teach the academic tutor the steps to solve a similar problem. Often times, the journey is more important than the destination and we want to make sure that students understand the process to solve problems and how to apply them to the real world.

Skill Builders:

Skill builders are workshops, classes and initiative designed to encourage participants with academic activities, discussions, and journaling. Skill builders develop valuable life skills such as study habits, communication skills, time management, money management, and critical thinking.  Other skill builders seek to enhance the participant’s cultural awareness by educating them on current and historical people and events.   Skill builders seek to enhance participant’s consciousness on issues that the public education does not.
